Why I Switched To A Natural Skin Care Routine
I feel I’ve been waiting 10 years to publish this post. Okay, it’s been more a year but I’m still beyond excited to be sharing this new journey with you.
I obviously chat a lot about healthy food and fitness around here so it only makes sense that I should care about what I’m putting on my body, but this thought didn’t click with me until about a year ago.
I know, I know, how could I be all preachy about what I put in my body but not care what I put on it? Honestly, it was guilt that got the best of me, but in making the transition to a natural skin care routine I have learned so much about what’s in conventional skincare products that I am just grateful I made the switch when I did.
I know what you’re thinking, “oh she’s gone off the deep end” or “thank you for the hippie talk”. I get it, I’ve been there, and I’ve judged people for thinking that their moisturizer was going to kill them.
While I don’t know that the correlation is that direct, I do know that if I ate McDonalds for the rest of my life, I’m pretty sure I would die of heart disease.
So if I’m putting chemicals all over my body each and every day, there must be some health implications to that.
I NEVER ever thought I would be the type of person who used natural beauty and skincare products, but now here I am telling you why I switched to a Natural Skin Care Routine.
I challenge you to take a second to read the labels on some of your beauty products.
When I did I was shocked to discover there was no actual oil in my argan oil and my facewash’s first ingredient was Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, a carcinogenic chemical found in most conventional beauty products.
This is the reason I switched. If there was no way I was eating Blue #6, then why does it need to be in my beauty products?
It was really quite simple, ignorance was no longer bliss.
My Favorite Natural Skin Care Products
When I finally decided to make the switch, a product line that came highly recommended to me was Skin Essence Organics. Little did I know that it was love at first sight. I’m pretty lucky to have found a brand of natural skin care products that my skin both loves and is local. I’m even luckier to be teaming up with them to bring you some awesome products today.
Funny story how this little partnership came about. I was at the Green Living Show and saw that Skin Essence had a booth. I’ve been obsessed with their products for about a year now and impulsively ran over to tell them how much I love their stuff.
Turns out someone had run over just before me and had done the exact same thing. The people checking out the products at the booth thought they had hired us because two people in a row declared their rave reviews.
This is when you know it’s a good product.
What I also love about this company is how awesome they are about educating their customers. Each time I speak with them I learn something new! Here are some useful tips…
What to Avoid In Your Skin Care Products
-If you can’t pronounce it, don’t use it. I have the same attitude when it comes to food. With the exception of quinoa…
-Stay away from parabens. The most common are butylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben. Parabens are considered xenoestrogens―agents that mimic estrogen in the body. “Estrogen disruption” has been linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues.
-Avoid products in plastic bottles. The good stuff needs to be protected in dark amber bottles and should have an expiry date. If it doesn’t, it’s ly full of preservatives.
-If the first ingredient is water, it’s no bueno. It’s a cheap filler used as a diluent. Just don’t buy it.
Why I love Skin Essence Organics
Their products are so clean, you can straight up eat it. In fact I have and they’re delicious (please don’t judge me…). They’re also completely organic and fair-trade.
They have a whole line of products for every skin type and all of their ingredients you’ve most ly heard of. The only ones that were unfamiliar to me were some of the oils because they’re from plants in faraway lands that contain magical properties. Clearly I’m simplifying and it’s more scientific than that!
They have a ton of different skin care products which you can CHECK OUT HERE but I wanted to highlight some of my favorites with you today.
Ocular Eye Serum – helps to improve dark circles, reduce puffiness and smooth fine lines.
Facial Oils – The two that I love are the rose hip seed oil and light oil. both are cold-pressed and certified organic.
Fresh Face Cleanser – a mixture of vegetable glycerin (from coconut) and essential oils to clean off excess oils and dirt.
Facial In a Jar – I use this as an exfoliant to remove dead skin cells that clog pores and form blackheads.
While I do use every single one of these products, I also have a couple others in my repetoir. I use a homemade facial toner (stay tuned for the recipe on SHEuncovered) as well as a vegan and organic hyaluronic serum.
And of course you know my love for FACEMASK FRIDAYS over on Snapchat where I make a homemade facemask from kitchen staples! When I’m in a crunch, I also use Skin Essence’s Facemask mix (made with oat powder, clay, stevia leaf and chamomile flowers).
If you’re curious what my typical skin care routine looks , here it is:
1. I wash off the daily grind with the Fresh Face Cleanser. About 3 times a week I exfoliate with the facial in a jar after cleansing.
2. I use a cotton pad to apply my homemade face toner
3. I wet my face slightly and use the hyaluronic serum
4. Followed by the light oil in the morning or the rose hip seed oil at night
5. I also use the ocular cream in the morning and evening (or when I remember!)
I know it seems odd to be moisturizing my skin with oil, but it’s not the heavy oils found in coconut or olive oil. It’s much lighter and in fact your skin needs oil in order to look healthy and plump and function as it should. It might take some time to find the best oil for your skin, but once you find it you just know!
I figured I probably shouldn’t get through this whole post without sharing with you guys what my skin actually looks .
I asked C to take a pic of me last weekend when we were hanging out with some friends in Trinity Bellwoods.
I do not have a stitch of makeup on my face! I actually hate wearing makeup so this is what I look most of the time. I’m so grateful to have found awesome products that allow me to pull this off.
Your skin is the largest organ in your body.
When you think about it this way, it seems crazy to cover it with all of the chemicals found in conventional beauty and skin care products. Everything you put on your skin is absorbed into your blood stream. It’s not food that passes through your liver and kidneys.
That being said, I recommend you start small. You don’t need to go replace everything in your bathroom but week by week start replacing your conventional skin care products with a more natural variety Skin Essence Organics.
Replacing it all at once might lead to your skin freaking out so try doing it one product at a time. And don’t give up if at first your skin isn’t so happy.
Sometimes it takes trial and error to figure out what products do and don’t work for your skin.
Lucky for you, Skin Essence Organics has offered THM readers and awesome GIVEAWAY!

The Correct Order to Apply Your Skincare Products
This post was published (almost exactly!) two years ago, but is one I reference frequently so I wanted to update it with my most current thoughts + favorite products as a few things have changed!
The Correct Order to Apply Your Skincare Products
One of the questions I get asked the most is what skincare product to apply, when!? With so many products out there (serum! toner! essence! oils!) layering your skincare products can feel really overwhelming/ It doesn’t have to be though, I promise! The general rule is to layer your products from thin to thick; and to apply the products with the highest percentage of active ingredients first so that they are absorbed first.
I’m not an expert, but I have talked to a lot of experts about this, and this is what I have been told. I’ve talked about product order before in my bedtime skincare routine but today I wanted to break things down in full.
I think the biggest “controversial” part of my routine (if skincare routines can be controversial, ha ha) is whether to apply face oil before or after moisturizer.
I’ve been taught that it’s the last step, but if you want to apply it before your moisturizer, do that, no one is stopping you!
I’ve seen it in my DM’s and reader emails, everyone stresses out about doing things the wrong way. You’re not going to ruin your face because you didn’t follow the recommended product order.
The only thing that is truly bad for your skin is using too many actives at night (or skipping SPF during the day).
Listen to your skin, experiment to see what works, don’t stress! Pampering should be fun… applying things in a slightly “wrong” order is not going to ruin your life.
Cleanse and exfoliate:
Obviously this is the first step. But I included it because if you are doing a double cleanse (more on that here),you should use the creamy/oil cleanser first.
These are frequently applied to dry skin and the point is to use that rich cleanser to get your makeup off, and then use a gel cleanser to get your skin extra clean.
If you are doing a face scrub, that’s the last part of your cleansing process.
current favs: my favorite creamy cleanser // my favorite oil cleanser // my favorite gel cleanser //my favorite face scrub
For the longest time, I didn’t think toner was necessary but recently changed my position. Toner should be the last step of your cleansing routine. If you use a toner, this is where you do it. Pat skin dry and apply all over with a cotton pad. This toner is my personal favorite! I wrote more about toners and why you need one in this post!
The next step is your essence. Whereas toner is the last step of cleansing, essence is the first step of skincare. (If you use it – you can read about my love of SK-II in this post.) I apply my essence (Right now my favorite essence is actually the newer Royal Fern one – it’s described as “if P50 and SK-II had a baby” and I think that’s pretty spot on).
*Note: P50 is very very active and I consider it an acid, not an essence. I recommend only using at night, and if you do use it before bed don’t use other actives (retinol, Vit C, etc). Just moisturize. You could do a gentle serum hyaluronic acid, but you don’t want to do much else. Also, re: P50, Helena did a great review of it!
I wrote a longer post about the difference between essence and toner; highly recommend reading that if you are at all confused!
Serum or Actives.
Serum is the next step. The way you want to think of your product order is that you want to apply the ingredients with the highest concentration of active ingredients first, so that they’re closest to the skin and absorbed first.
Essence is packed with actives, as is serum. But because essence is more viscous (it’s consistency is water), you want to apply that first. I use a bunch of different serums/actives.
Below is a loose guide to my favs and how often I use them.
Obviously Bader is king (for me) but on serum nights I don’t use it (I make sure to use it in the AM instead if I don’t do it at night!)
My second to last step is always my moisturizer. I love a thick, velvety moisturizer. The Tatcha Dewy Skin Cream is probably my favorite for non-Bader nights but I also love Skin Food!
If you use an eye cream or a neck cream, this is when I to apply these! I don’t currently do a separate neck cream (I do my skincare all the way down to the decolletage) but for eye cream I love the Ole Banana Bright for day (I know there have been issues; mine is fine and I have had no reactions – I’m hesitant to repurchase but really the Farmacy brightening one too!) and at night I’ll do the Olay retinol one or Tatcha!
Oil or SPF
The last step in your routine should be face oil (at night) or SPF (day).
Oil is what seals it all in! I to let everything I’ve applied sink in for a minute or two while I brush my teeth, and then gently pat on my oils.
For me, oils are saved for nighttime as after serum AND moisturizer I’m already pretty shiny, but I really to lock in all that moisture.
My favorite is Everyday Oil and sometimes if I am feeling really extra I will doVintner’s Daughter over Dr. Bader. Yes I know that’s one very expensive skincare routine but it’s an incredible combo.
For SPF right now I am VERY big into the Supergoop Glowscreen. It’s so pretty that you can skip makeup (or put foundation over it for a more subtle glow).
10-Step Korean Skin Care Routine
By now the mythical, magical, and somewhat daunting Korean skin care routine has been demystified. This multi-step routine was made famous by Korean women and K-pop stars, and is now a cornerstone of the booming K-beauty industry. For those who love a thorough routine, this is where you belong!
The method is a complex layering system, which protects and uses each product to its fullest potential. This trail-blazing layering routine has a deep philosophy of ritualizing the skin care experience, and is a staple of Korean beauty.
Skin care is personal, and there’s no catch-all routine that will work for everyone. What we love about the Korean skin care routine is that it’s structured with this in mind. Depending on your specific skin concerns, you can tailor this routine to focus on certain details. Common goals are clarifying, anti-aging, and brightening – with a side of glass skin, please!
The Korean skin care layering system is both an artform and a science; it all boils down to molecular sizes and textures of formulas. This routine pre-determines which products should be first, second, and so on for it to properly penetrate your skin.
Here we’ve built the scaffolding of a natural 10-step Korean skin care routine. You can play and experiment with these steps, until you find your perfect and unique routine. Give yourself a few days to try it out, and see what works for you!
The 10-Step Korean Skin Care RoutineSTEP 1: First Cleanse (Oil)
When embarking on your Korean skin care routine, the first step is to gently cleanse with the help of natural oils. The idea of using oil to remove makeup and impurities might be terrifying for oily or acne-prone skin types, but stick with us!
The purpose behind starting your Korean skin care routine with an oil-based cleanser is to get as much debris off as possible in the first step. Oil is the most effective tool for dissolving sebum, stubborn makeup, and debris in your pores.
Our Blood Orange Cleansing Balm is made with oils of organic avocado, coconut, and olive to simultaneously cleanse and moisturize your delicate skin. We recommend taking an extra minute or two to give yourself a facial massage while cleansing your face – since you’re already signed up for 10 steps, might as well make them count!
This rich and buttery cleansing balm turns into a silky smooth oil on contact. Scoop it out with dry fingers, and massage gently into skin – no tugging or harsh rubbing required. When wiping away your balm with a wet rag, make sure the water is warm; cool water won’t be as effective.
STEP 2: Second Cleanse (Water)
Onward to the second phase of your facial cleanse! Double cleansing is a key piece of the Korean skin care routine.
A water-based cleanser (the second cleanse) serves as a cleanup crew for your pores, helping to flush away excess oil while priming with first-phase hydration.
This step also helps to balance the lipid barrier, for optimal nutrient absorption and moisture retention in the next steps.
Directly after your oil cleanse, saturate a cotton pad with micellar water. Repeatedly sweep over your skin until cotton pads are no longer picking up dirt, oil, or makeup. Rinse briefly before continuing to the next step.
PRO TIP: Some opt for a foam cleanser instead of a water based cleanser. Bear in mind that most foaming formulas contain harsh surfactants, and can overdy the skin. For more info on cleansers tailor-made to your skin type, check out our cleanser guide!
Traditional exfoliating skin care products use harsh and abrasive bits of shells or nonrenewable plastic for exfoliants. Harsh scrub ingredients might feel they really “get in there”, but trust us when we say they aren’t helping your skin!
Hard and oversized physical exfoliants will often cause more damage to your skin. They can potentially enlarge pores, trigger sensitization and irritation, and over time will create abrasions and micro-tears in your skin.
For your Korean skin care routine, opt for gentle, natural, and effective exfoliators. These can include jojoba beads, grape seeds, or acai pulp.
Pulp from acai berries is the hidden hero in our Acai Pulp Facial Scrub, working behind the scenes to slough away dead skin cells.
These fruit particles also keep our environment and wildlife safe, by not clogging rivers or animal tummies with non-biodegradable plastic beads.
You can incorporate an exfoliating step into your Korean skin care routine your specific skin type and needs. For most skin types, 2-3 times per week is safe for skin exfoliation. Once a week should be sufficient for dry skin, and those with extra sensitive skin might want to start with once a month and increase frequency as needed.
Concentrating on your T-Zone, gently buff circles onto your skin while avoid harsh or repetitive rubbing or scrubbing motions. The increased circulation will leave you with a healthy glow, and ready to move on to your next skin care layer.
PRO TIP: You can leave this scrub on for a few minutes as a potent antioxidant mask. When applying and before rinsing, gently massage the scrub onto your skin in slow, upwards motions.
This essential step is about enhancing hydration and restoring pH balance. 100% PURE™ has given harsh, alcohol-based toners a much-needed makeover. We create gentle, balanced formulas that prime skin for enhanced absorption. We even add hyaluronic acid from sweet potatoes to our toners, for a deeply hydrating mid-routine treat.
Another key purpose of the toner/essence step is to purify, soften, and pre-moisturize your skin. They swipe away any dead skin cells left on the skin after your exfoliating step, while priming and plumping with hydration. Even oily and acne-prone skin need a splash of water, and each of our toners provide just that.
Our Fermented Rice Toner uses bearberry, licorice, and malic acid from sake to brighten skin.
Restorative Sea Culture Hydrating Toner, delivers intense water-drenching power from seaweed from unpolluted waters to soften, plump, and hydrate thristry skin.
Working together with antibacterial and antiseptic herbs, our Tea Tree & Willow Astringent will soothe, clarify, and fend off future breakouts without stripping or irritating your delicate skin.
DIRECTIONS: Toner/essences can be pumped into clean hands and gently patted onto your face. Alternatively, you can dispense them onto a clean cotton pad and gently sweep onto your skin.
You’re halfway through the Korean skin care routine! Step five is all about targeting specific concerns, with deeply penetrating active ingredients. Time to deliver much-needed vitamins, minerals, and nutrients into your skin!
Depending on when you do your 10-step routine, you’ll be using either a daytime or nighttime formula. If you’ve got dull or lackluster skin, apply a thin layer of Fermented Rice Water Serum. To soothe and plump dry or aging skin, opt for the ultra refreshing Restorative Sea Culture Replenishing Serum.
If you’re headed to bed, get a mega-boost of anti-aging vitamins with the best-selling Multi-Vitamin + Antioxidants Potent PM Serum. What sets this serum apart from every other serum on the skin care market? Our unique technology for combining powerful vitamin C and niacinamide, which synergistically activates intense anti-aging benefits for skin.
DIRECTIONS: Apply your serum onto moist, freshly toned skin. Allow your serum to fully absorb for 60-90 seconds, before following with additional product.
Color us obsessed, because we just can’t imagine life before face masks. Natural face masks are incredibly effective hydrators that soak healing, hydrating ingredients into your skin until they literally shrivel up. The secret behind this powerful beauty tool is that it avoids the pitfall of product evaporation, which can happen with cream masks that are openly exposed to air.
Leave your sheet mask on for at least 15 – 20 minutes to let it fully activate. For maximum benefits, make adjustments to the mask to help it lay flat on your face. It’s ok to gently tear slits on the sides of the eye or mouth holes, to better fit your particular face shape.
Eyes are the windows to the soul – and dead giveaways of our age and sleep habits. Chances are your eye area could use a little help, which is why we advocate paying special attention to this delicate area.
As home to the most fragile skin on your face, the eye area requires true TLC. Each of our natural eye creams is packed with skin-beneficial ingredients, and we can even help you choose the perfect eye cream for your Korean skin care routine.
A true skin care celebrity in the beauty world, our Coffee Bean Eye Cream comes in big for de-puffing, brightening, and moisturizing. Our antioxidant-rich Super Fruit Oil Nourishing Eye Cream helps to fend off damage from pollution, smog, smoke, and anything else trying to infiltrate your delicate dermis.
For your nighttime Korean skin care routine, employ the plant-based retinol of our Retinol PM Eye Cream. This eye cream is packed with regenerating vegan stem cells and a concentration of vitamins and peptides. It helps to support collagen, elasticity, and help lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
DIRECTIONS: For application of any eye cream in this step: dot under eyes, onto eyelids, and onto crow’s feet. Always use gentle upward tapping motions to blend, being careful to never tug or pull skin.
Moisture and hydration are everything in the Korean skin care routine. This is why the layering steps leading up to this point will really allow your moisturizer to reach its fullest potential! This is your chance to seal in the ingredients you’ve applied up to this point, while keeping your skin looking bouncy and fresh.
For damaged skin or for someone who is battling pollution on a daily basis (we’re looking at you, city slickers), we’d recommend opting for our Green Tea EGCG Protective Cream. This moisturizer is our most universal formula, and helps to ward off toxins and aging pollutants found in the air.
To deliver intensive moisture through the night, take advantage of this step in your Korean skin care routine. Apply a generous layer of our Mutli-Vitamin cream after your nighttime serum for a creamy, dreamy vitamin treatment. This cream is known to make skin feel baby-smooth when you awake the next morning!
DIRECTIONS: After your serum has fully absorbed, dispense moisturizer into palm and warm it between clean fingers. Gently massage onto skin, using an upward feathering motion with fingers. Work from your neck up to the face, avoiding the delicate eye area.
PRO TIP: For a full breakdown of products for each skin type, reference our natural moisturizer guide!
Moving on to the penultimate step: oil! Our pure, undiluted argan oil is rich in vitamin E, carotenoids, squalene, and essential fatty acids. Layering a facial oil over your moisturizer will aid in moisture retention and suppleness. This skin-softening oil is the perfect tool for deeply moisturizing your skin, while enhancing youthful elasticity.
DIRECTIONS: Oil can be a multi-use, multi-area treatment, so don’t feel you have to stop at your face. Gently sweep argan oil around your decollete, hands, hair and anywhere else needing a little moisturization.
PRO TIP: Dry skin types may choose to add an 11th step, here! After steps 8 and 9, spritz your skin with a facial mist to speed absorption and further enhance hydration.
STEP 10: Sunscreen or Night Balm
Our skin care journey is drawing to a close, and you get a gold star for making it to the end! When finishing your morning routine, always finish with SPF in order to protect the hard work you’ve put into your skin. Our Tomato Lycopene SPF 20 Moisturizer is made with powerful, antioxidant-rich lycopene and nourishing oils of sunflower, sea buckthorn, and tomato.
If you’re at your last step and it’s the evening, swap SPF for a sleeping mask a few times a week.
The Retinol Restorative Overnight Balm is a rich, buttery balm made to nourish, brighten, and smooth your skin while you snooze.
You’ll wake up to a replenished complexion, with all the hard work having been done while you slept. Remember to ALWAYS wear sun protection the next day after using this high potency retinol treatment.
