We enlisted the help of a couple of dermatologists and a celebrity facialist to get the secrets for achieving your best skin yet.

Believe it or not, one kitchen essential can gently exfoliate the most sensitive or breakout-prone skin without the need for harsh scrubbing or a chemical-laden peel.

Celebrity Facialist Joanna Vargas explains, “Raw apple cider vinegar is perfect for any skin type and particularly amazing for people who break out. It exfoliates, balances the skin, and it also helps calm breakouts and heals them quickly.

” Vargas suggests applying a small amount all over your face you would toner using a cotton round.

Vargas adds, “It’s not acidic, so it’s very gentle. Leave it on the skin as an overnight treatment, and it will make your skin look better in the morning—I would just warn people that the smell is not for everyone!”

Not only do they make for a great Instagram selfie, but sheet masks are great skin hydrators. So, before you layer on your skincare products for the evening, Dr. Kenneth Howe of Wexler Dermatology suggests indulging skin with a heaping dose of extra moisture.

“My favorite is the SK-II Facial Treatment Mask, which contains Pitera,” he says. “Derived from the yeasts involved in the fermentation of sake, Pitera is very similar to the natural moisturizing factors of our skin. It enables our skin to better hold on to moisture.

” The result? “A more glowing, dewy appearance,” he says.

This is especially true on the nights leading up to the big day, Dr. Howe tells us. “If we’re talking about the actual night before the wedding, it can be helpful to avoid highly salty foods as they can lead to puffiness.

” He also explains that puffiness under the eyes especially can lead to a tired look. “A de-puffing gel can help take down the swelling. A product such as Wexler Fastscription De-Puff Eye Gel actually works quickly,” he tells us.

If you’re still on the fence about facial oils, consider this more reason to take the leap.

“Oils protect the outer layer of the skin and provide rich antioxidants to prevent against DNA damage,” explains Dr. Talakoub. She suggests layering an oil under your night cream for optimal results.

“Choose [an oil] that is non-comedogenic. My favorites are ones with argan oil, sunflower seed oil, or marula oil.”

One of the keys to achieving radiant skin is good old vitamin C. The super ingredient banishes dark spots and improves skin tone, revealing beautifully glowy skin—and who doesn’t want that? Dr.

Talakoub reminds us to apply and massage around the eye area for a double dose of great skin. “Apply a brightening eye cream with vitamin C or licorice root extract from your temples to the inner corners of your eyes,” she says.

“The vitamin C brightens dark under-eye circles while the outward massage helps improve lymphatic drainage, decreasing morning under-eye puffiness.”

1. Use a One-Step Makeup Remover
Sleeping in cosmetics is a surefire way to clog your pores and boost free radicals, which speed up the aging process.

To promote glowy, clean skin that is super-receptive to the products you apply in the morning, Chiu says to look for a two-in-one product. “Cleansers that remove makeup and clean the skin at the same time are great shortcuts to reduce beauty regimen time,” she says.

2. Exfoliate With Glycolic Acid
Sloughing off the top layer of dead skin cells gives you extra radiance, says Chiu. But exfoliating daily with conventional grainy exfoliators can be really harsh on skin, confusing the oil glands and actually making your face oilier.

Instead, Chiu recommends trying glycolic acid, which is gentler. “Before big events, use a product Exuviance Performance Peel ($75, ulta.

com), which has a blend of glycolic, mandelic acid, and gluconolactone to plump up fine lines, give the skin radiance, and allow makeup to go on a smooth canvas the next day,” she says.

3. Try A Night Oil
To get a boost of radiance overnight with just one drop of product, night oils may be your best friend.

They penetrate into the skin better than other products, providing a great vehicle for active ingredients. Chiu recommends using a night oil a few times a week to give your complexion an extra boost.

4. …Or a Multitasking Face Cream
Love the luxurious feeling of slathering on a super-hydrating cream at night? To boost glow while you sleep, Chiu recommends applying a multitasking face cream that not only hydrates, but also exfoliates.

She says to look for one that contails polyhydroxy acids gluconolactone and lactobionic acids. Apply a thick layer before bed, and cleanse it off in the morning for a radiant finish. Chiu recommends NeoStrata Bionic Face Cream ($54, neostrata.com).

5. Put On a Sleep Mask
“Overnight masks are a great way to treat your skin and give it extra attention,” says Chiu. “The skin undergoes more cellular repair during sleep and can be more receptive to products at this time.

” She recommends using an overnight mask a few times a week in lieu of going through your usual nighttime regimen. Simply cleanse, slather on a layer of the mask, and go to sleep. She recommends trying Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask ($25, origins.

  • Silk Pillowcase: silk pillowcases help prevent wrinkles on your face but they are also great for you hair, too! They help your hair retain moisture and prevent tangles.
  • Scalp Detox: Using your fingers, massage a hair oil all over your scalp. This will increase circulation and promote hair growth. Wash with a purifying shampoo in the morning and your hair should look glossy and shiny.

Overnight Beauty Hacks for Hands and Feet

  • Strengthen Nails: Apply two coats of a nail serum , Sally Hansen Gel Rehab, before bed to repair weak and brittle nails.
  • Moisturize Cuticles: If your cuticles are cracked and dry, apply a small amount of coconut oil or shea butter to the cuticles and massage the oil into them. Leave on overnight.
  • Repair Dry Hands and Feet: If you have dry, cracked hands or feet, use a pumice stone or exfoliant in the shower. Then wear some gel socks and/or gloves to bed. For a cheaper option, apply Vaseline to your hands or feet and sleep in cotton socks and gloves to keep moisture in your skin.

While some might think it’s just a catchy phrase, beauty sleep is a real thing, confirms Whitney Bowe, M.D., a New York City dermatologist and author of Dirty Looks.

“When we sleep, our stress hormone (cortisol) goes down and our sleep hormone (melatonin) goes up. Our body, and our skin, are in repair mode.

” In other words, nighttime gives our skin the opportunity to recover from any daytime damage.

If you want your skin and hair to look younger and healthier before you even start your daily beauty routine, here’s everything you need to know about getting a good night's sleep the night before:

What are the benefits of beauty sleep?

Brighter, de-puffed eyes

“Lack of restorative sleep can leave your eyes looking puffy in the morning. Why? Because, when you’re under stress, your cortisol levels rise, and this changes the salt balance in your body.

In turn, this can lead you to retain water – hence, puffiness,” says Dr. Bowe. For less puffy eyes, try the above extra-pillow trick to help drain fluids! “When you lie flat, fluid can gather around your eyes,” explains Elizabeth Tanzi, M.

D., a dermatologist in Washington, D.C.

Youthful, glowing skin

When we sleep, our skin is busy healing itself from damage we might have sustained in the day from UV rays or pollution. “In fact, studies show that new skin cells grow faster while you sleep,” says Dr.

Bowe. “Take advantage of this period of skin renewal and restoration by cleansing skin before bed and choosing products that will optimize this recovery period so that you wake up with healthier skin.

Fewer wrinkles and lessened signs of aging

Time might be passing as we’re sound asleep, but our skin’s clock turns backwards during that time. “If nothing else convinces you to go to bed on time, let maintaining youthful-looking skin be the one that does,” urges Dr.

Bowe. To make sure you wake up wrinkle-free, both Dr. Bowe and Jesleen Ahluwalia, M.D., suggest you sleep on your back. “Repeated pressure on the skin, causing creasing, can eventually lead to set-in lines,” says Dr. Ahluwalia.

More mileage from your skin care products

“The deeper layers of your skin are working at night to repair damage from the environmental stressors they encounter all day long.

Your skin is also working to build new collagen, which keeps your skin firm and smooth,” explains Dr. Bowe.

“This is why you really want to choose your nighttime products strategically to optimize your skin’s recovery during those restful, restorative hours!”

Healthier, stronger, and longer hair

Beauty sleep actually contributes to beautiful, fuller hair, too “Sleep is actually needed for proper protein synthesis of your hair and it can impact your hormones, which will also have an impact on your hair’s growth and appearance,” says Dr. Bowe.

How many hours are necessary for beauty sleep?

When it comes to snoozing, the magic number falls between seven and eight hours of rest per night, but Dr. Bowe reminds us it’s not only the amount of sleep that matters, but the quality of our rest too.

“Not all sleep is equally restorative,” explains Dr. Bowe. REM sleep happens at some point in the middle of the night, so rather than hitting the snooze button on weekends, Dr.

Bowe suggests going to bed earlier and waking up at the same time every morning.

What does sleep deprivation do to your face?

“You look tired.” It’s easy for our friends and colleagues to tell when we haven’t gotten our beauty sleep thanks to pesky dark circles and lackluster skin. “Our body perceives loss of sleep, or lack of quality of sleep as stress,” says Dr. Bowe. “Those stress signals not only cause breakouts, but also make skin less capable of trapping moisture and it slows down skin cell turnover.”

What should you apply to your face before sleeping?

Face cleanser

Not taking off your makeup at the end of the day can cause pores to get clogged, which can then lead to breakouts. Dr.

Bowe recommends,“a gentle, pH balanced cleanser that will not strip your skin of its healthy oils and that will maintain the slightly acidic environment your skin barrier needs to remain intact and healthy,” Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser (a Good Housekeeping favorite face cleanser!).

An anti-aging night cream

Never skip your nightly cream or serum. These products work better during the “repair cycle of the skin,” which is at night, Dr. Jaliman says. An anti-aging night cream cream or serum with vitamin A or retinol before bed will help counteract fine lines, says David Leffell, M.D., a professor of dermatology and surgery at Yale University School of Medicine.

These ingredients are “often added to topical skincare products to promote skin renewal, brighten skin tone, reduce acne and boost your skin’s collagen production,” explains Dr. Bowe.

Alternatively, hyaluronic acid attracts water into the skin, which helps smooth wrinkles, confirms Francesca Fusco, M.D., a New York City-based dermatologist.

Don't forget lip balm and lash conditioner, too!

Silk pillowcase and hair accessories

Opt for a silk pillowcase instead of being negative affected by cotton: “Silk is easier on hair — it helps avoid tangles and breakage,” says Dr. Ahluwalia.

“It's also better for the skin because the material glides easily and prevents creasing and wrinkles.” Keep your hair your face while you're sleeping by wrapping it up in a silk scarf, Chicago-based makeup artist Alle Connell suggests. Dr.

Ahluwalia says that high, loose ponytail is a great way to keep your most recent blowout intact.

Sorry girls, panda eyes aren’t the key to waking up looking gorgeous. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that sleeping in your makeup means that you’ll look gorgeous when you wake up.

The chances are, no matter how smudge-proof, waterproof or long-lasting that mascara is, it will be a mess by the time you’ve tossed and turned in it all night.

 Cleanse away any dirt and oils that are sitting on top of your skin before bed and you’ll wake up feeling clean and beautiful.

Slather on some body butter before you drift off into dreamland to wake up feeling smooth and smelling good. Pay particular attention to dry areas such as elbows and knees. For super smooth legs, make sure you’ve gone through your usual hair removal routine before you go to bed so you can be proud to strut around looking gorgeous in the morning.
