It seems every time we turn around, there’s a hot new skincare ingredient promising to take the skincare world by store.

Kakadu plum, a small, sour fruit native to Australia, is the latest natural ingredient to find itself in the beauty spotlight, and we’re genuinely excited.

Currently in everything from masks to serums, this Aussie superfood will give you the most gorgeous skin of your life. Here’s why Kakadu plum is our skincare MVP—and why you need this ingredient in your beauty life, too.

It’s an amazing source of Vitamin C.

Vitamin C is essential for glowing skin; it firms skin, helps fade dark spots, can help fade acne scarring, and improves the way skin responds to UV light—all crucial things on our minds as we leave the beachy days of summer.

So we consider Vitamin C a skincare essential, and Kakadu Plums contain a whole lot of it. In fact, it’s estimated that a single Kakadu plum contains more Vitamin C than an orange—55 times more, to be exact. That’s pretty amazing.

Vitamin C also stimulates hair growth, making it an amazing ingredient for those of us trying to grow out the long bobs of summer. Sign us up!

A natural acne-fighter.
Kakadu plums are used by local tribes as medicine—and it’s especially known as a traditional antibiotic and anti-inflammatory. This means that, when applied to skin, it can reduce swelling, redness and even help get rid of bacterially-induced acne.

We know, it sounds a bit of an overblown buzzy term, but antioxidants—which help protect your skin from environmental damage, UV damage and pollution—are crucial to your complexion’s good health when applied topically.

They don’t just contain Vitamin C, but additional lesser-known antioxidants Gallic acid (good for restoring the skin’s natural barrier) and Ellagic acid (helps restore elasticity to skin).

In fact, Kakadu plum contains such powerful antioxidants that it’s being studied in Alzheimer’s trials.

It’s sustainable.
So this plant is amazing for your skin—and that’s fantastic. But perhaps the best thing about it is that it’s also good for the planet; Kakadu plum is the epitome of a socially responsible, sustainable crop.

Isolated indigenous communities, who already have access to this wild-growing plant, are able to cultivate and harvest the fruit, which creates jobs and helps establish horticulture as a sustainable industry in the area.

Now how’s that for beautiful?

It comes in many forms.
No matter how you your skincare, there’s a Kakadu pear-containing product for you. If you love a good serum, try DERMAdoctor Kakadu C Serum ($95, Sephora) and get the maximum absorbable amount of Vitamin C in a wonderfully smooth, skin-perfecting formula.

If masks are more your speed, we recommend Coast to Coat Skin Brightening Red Clay Mask ($24.95, Coast to Coast) for soothing, radiance-boosting results you can see immediately. If you your skincare super simple, we can’t get enough of this Calendula and Kakadu Plum Day Cream ($24, Etsy).

It’s handmade in small batches with all organic ingredients, and applies a dream to our skin. We’re truly obsessed.

So what are you waiting for? Get into Kakadu plum today, and your skin will thank us tomorrow.

Is Kakadu Plum the Newest Must-Have Beauty Ingredient?

  • It's the color of a grape Popsicle and smells just as sweet, but it's better because it won't stain your whole mouth. In addition to promoting a glow-y, even skin tone (thanks, kakadu plum), this thick mask contains kaolin and bentonite clays to deep clean and absorb oil, glycerin to moisturize, and lactic acid to gently exfoliate. It's so good that you (probably) won't even care that you look Violet Beauregarde while you're wearing it.
  • “Vitamin C has been used in skin care to provide free-radical protection as well as to help even skin tone and reduce the look of wrinkles,” says Robinson. The kakadu plum in this serum delivers a ton of vitamin C, plus vitamin E and ferulic acid, two other antioxidants. (Not to get too science-y, but ferulic acid also helps stabilize vitamins C and E, making them more effective.) And un some serums that pill the second you layer moisturizer or makeup over them, this lightweight formula soaks in within seconds.
  • According to Zeichner, serums are an especially effective way to work kakadu plum into your skin-care routine. “The active fruit extract is the most concentrated in serums,” he explains. This moisturizing one also includes olive oil, glycerin, squalane, and grape-seed oil, making it ideal for dry skin.
  • This thick, rich moisturizer is spiked with marshmallow extract, hyaluronic acid, safflower oil, and sunflower oil, so it's coddling to parched, dull skin. And the formula combines kakadu plum with other known brightening ingredients, turmeric and licorice-root extracts, for a potent anti-dark-spot cocktail. But a note of advice from Zeichner if you're planning on using it along with your other nightly skin-care products: “I'm cautious to mix vitamin-C-containing products with topical retinoids, over-the-counter retinol, since retinol is unstable and can easily be inactivated by acidic compounds that contain vitamin C,” says Zeichner.
  • The vitamin C that kakadu plum brings to this shampoo helps stimulate the production of elastin and collagen, strengthening hair and making it look and feel healthier. It's also formulated with jojoba esters, hydrolyzed silk extracts, evening-primrose oil, and shea butter for tons of moisture.
  • Ideal for color-treated hair, this conditioner contains many of the same moisturizing ingredients as its shampoo counterpart, plus micro algae and vitamin B7, which both strengthen hair.
  • Kakadu plum isn't the only native Aussie ingredient in this mask, which is convenient, since it's made by an Australian brand. It also includes quandong, a fruit that's high in essential fatty acids, vitamin C, and Australian red clay, which moisturizes and evens skin texture.
  • In hair products, vitamin C acts as a shine enhancer, so it makes sense that an ingredient so rich in the vitamin—kakadu plum—would be included in a shine-enhancing shampoo. This deep-cleansing formula gets rid of dulling product buildup to leave hair gleaming.

The Incredible Skincare Benefits of Kakadu Plum

Skin Sleuth: What Is Kakadu Plum and What Does It Do for Your Skin?

I have an incredible passion for Australian wildcrafted ingredients and one of my absolute favourites is Kakadu Plum Seed Oil. Also referred to as ‘Gubinge, Billygoat Plum or Murunga’, this powerhouse fruit is grown natively in Northern Australia, The Kimberleys and Arnhem Land.

Used for years by Indigenous communities for its medicinal healing properties, Kakadu Plum Seed Oil offers an extensive list of benefits for the skin.

Grown free from human intervention, this beautiful wildcrafted ingredient is harvested in an environmentally friendly manner to protect its pristine natural habitat.

What are the skincare benefits of Kakadu Plum Seed Oil?

High levels of Vitamin C to improve skin quality

Well known for their incredibly high vitamin content, Kakadu Plums contain over 3000mg of Vitamin C per 100g of fruit1.

That’s a Vitamin C concentration 50% higher than oranges! When used in natural skincare products, this supercharged ingredient works to stimulate the production of collagen and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Vitamin C is also effective at reducing the appearance of scarring or hyperpigmentation as it naturally lightens the complexion.

Antioxidant rich to fight free radicals

Rich in antioxidants, this superfruit detoxifies the skin and fights off free radical damage caused by environmental factors such as pollution or sun exposure. Found in some of the most remote areas of Australia, Kakadu Plums have an extremely rare antioxidant profile. These harsh growing conditions mean each plum develops a highly efficient defence mechanism made up of diverse antioxidants

Naturally antibacterial to balance acne prone skin

Containing the phytochemicals gallic and ellagic acids, Kakadu Plums have long been sought after for their antifungal and antibacterial properties. While gallic acid works to restore the skin’s natural barrier, ellagic acid encourages skin elasticity and suppleness.  Ideal for acne or breakout prone skin, the oil extracted from these plums help to balance the complexion.

 Soothes irritation to reduce sensitivity

If you struggle with skin that’s prone to sensitivity, Kakadu Plum Seed Oil is deeply soothing. Containing gallic acid (a natural anti-inflammatory), this botanical ingredient helps to reduce redness, inflammation and irritation.

How can you incorporate Kakadu Plum Seed Oil into your skincare routine?

My favourite way to incorporate Kakadu Plum Seed Oil into any skincare routine is through a targeted facial serum or oil. Our No.

3 Exotic Goddess Ageless Serum is the ultimate youth and beauty booster containing a unique blend of wildcrafted botanicals. Hydrating, smoothing and plumping, this serum is ideal for applying after you cleanse and tone.

Containing supercharged ingredients including Kakadu Plum, Hyaluronic Acid and Edelweiss, your skin will be left more youthful and restored

If you’re looking to really get your glow back, I would also recommend introducing our & Snowflower Illuminating Face Oil into your daily routine.

Combining the benefits of vitamin C enriched Kakadu Plum Seed Oil, brightening Emu Apple Seed Oil and illuminating Snowflower Seed Oil, it’s the ultimate product for instant skin nourishment and rejuvenation.

You can apply this collagen boosting oil twice daily after cleansing or massage into any areas of the body that’s lacking moisture. My top tip? Add a drop or two into your foundation for an extra boost of radiance.

This Brightening Skincare Ingredient Might Be Even Better Than Vitamin C

Skin Sleuth: What Is Kakadu Plum and What Does It Do for Your Skin?

When the words “kakadu plum” began showing up in my inbox with greater and greater frequency, I got excited for three main reasons: One, it’s really fun to say.

Two, kakadu plum for skincare is said to rival traditional vitamin C products in terms of brightening capabilities. And three, it’s a natural ingredient that just so happens to be pretty darn powerful.

You know how some people (understandably) complain that natural skincare isn’t as effective as the man-made stuff? Yeah, that’s not what’s happening here — and dermatologists agree.

“The kakadu plum is believed to be the most concentrated natural source of vitamin C on earth,” Dr. Audrey Kunin, a board certified dermatologist and the founder of DERMAdoctor, tells The Zoe Report.

“Ounce per ounce, it contains on average 55 times the vitamin C of Florida oranges.

” As such, the superfruit — which is only found in the remote bush of the northwest territory of Australia — provides all of the benefits of vitamin C products and then some.

“Kakadu plum brightens the complexion, reduces hyperpigmentation, and protects from harsh environmental aggressors, such as pollution,” Andreas Abellana, the Creative Director for Australian skincare brand Generation Clay, tells TZR. It also makes for a firmer, plumper face by “helping to form proline, an amino acid that makes collagen,” he says.

While that’s all par for the course for vitamin C skincare, kakadu plums essentially take these properties to the next level. “They have superior antioxidant abilities with an Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) value five times that of blueberries,” Dr. Kunin says.

“Kakadu plums contain both water and fat-soluble antioxidant compounds that together may provide more comprehensive protection against oxidative stress.

” In layman’s terms, the ingredient is a mega-forcefield that keeps pollution from harming your skin — while actively healing past environmental damage.

The skincare wonder from Down Under has above-average antiseptic properties, too, which makes it “useful to clear pimple-causing bacteria,” Abellana says.

“Kakadu also contains two other fantastic acids,” Angela Kim, a natural K-beauty expert and the founder of Savor Beauty, tells TZR. “Gallic acid that naturally kills bacteria, which is great news for acne-prone skin; and ellagic acid, which reduces inflammation.

” This combination makes kakadu plum a multitasking must-have, able to treat everything from post-winter dullness to pimple emergencies.

As for where to find kakadu plum products, the A-beauty space — that’s Australian beauty, natch — is a good place to start. “A-beauty is a laid back, simplified approach to beauty: more benefits, less worries,” Bree Johnson, the co-founder and director of Frank Body, tells The Zoe Report.

“Our ingredient philosophy is about using naturally effective products so you don't have to work so hard.” And naturally, the brand calls on kakadu plum to work its magic in the A-Beauty Scrub, meant for all-over body exfoliation and “designed to target pigmentations, scars, and marks,” Johnson says.

Other A-beauty finds include Generation Clay Urban Defence Purifying Pink Australian Clay Mask, Mukti Blemish Control, and Dr. Roebuck’s Daintree AHA Brightening Mask.

Considering the sheer power behind this plum, there are some risks to consider. If you have sensitive skin, it’s recommended to do a small patch test before slathering kakadu products all over your precious face.

“Those with very dry or sensitive skin may wish to layer kakadu plum products with a hyaluronic acid serum, such as DERMAdoctor Wrinkle Revenge Ultimate Hyaluronic Acid Serum, to reduce potential stinging,” Dr.

Kunin suggests.
